About Rug Binding / Carpet Binding

Binding is when the edges of a rug or carpet are bounded to keep your rugs and carpets from unraveling or fraying.

Carpet Binding? Yes there is such a thing! A carpet can be made into a rug using carpet remnants, but you will need to bind the edges. Usually carpet remnants aren’t cut straight, so not only does binding give your rug straight and clean lines, it also protects you and your family since raw carpet edges are sharp.

Binding can be done on new or old rugs and carpets.

Rug/Carpet Binding by Rug Wash is done with a sewing machine to give the binding a clean, professional look and the bound is permanent.

About Shearing (Shaving) Rugs

In the old days, rugs were shaved by hand using scissors, with today’s technology, we can shave a rug quickly and efficiently to the desired shaving size.

At Rug Wash Inc., we have a computerized shearing process that can be performed at our facility.
We are able to shear a rug to all degrees from 1% to no pile.

We use state of the art machines to shave rugs to the exact thickness desired. Our machines contain a memory function which allows us to shave a number of rugs a certain way.

Why Shave A Rug?

1. If the color is sun faded, by lightly shaving we can get to the tip of the color to bring back the original, bright, vibrant color.

2. Over time, wearing of the rug causes the design to appear dull, by light shaving, we can bring back the original bright design.

3. Shearing is also used to thin out rugs which a number of customers prefer.

4. New rugs are shaved to give it an older look.

5. Some people like to shave their rugs unevenly to have a certain area appear more worn.

6. Once a rug is weaved, shearing is performed to make the pile even.

7. A part of the rug may have a high traffic area and may appear to be more worn then the rest of the rug.

8. Shearing helps remove fuzz from the rug. We shave the top of the rug fiber, which makes the rug design clearer and eliminates the fuzz. This process also leaves the rug with a glossy finish.

Moth Protection, Treatment & Repairs

A sneaky enemy of your rug is moths. Our rug cleaning process includes moth proofing which prevents moths from silently destroying the fibers of your rug (especially in wool rugs) which can cause extensive damage. This is especially important when you are planning to store your rug away.

Rug insect protection works very similar to our general rug protection process the only difference is a special detergent is used. This process prevents moths from eating or coming near your rug. We also offer a treatment to kill and remove any insect eggs or nesting.

All rugs MUST be cleaned prior to our rug insect protection application process.

The following is our process:
1. Rugs are dusted using our dust machine to remove all dust and residue.
2. Rugs are then put through our tumbling machine with a smoker to be sure all moths and insects are removed.
3. Followed by brushing each rug with a powerful brushing machine to make sure all eggs that are hidden are removed.
4. Rugs are then washed and cleaned using a special detergent to prevent any moths or insects from returning to your rugs.
5. The last step is hanging your rugs in our climate controlled drying room. Once dried, rugs are brushed, inspected and packed for delivery.

Tips:

• We highly recommend use of solutions with cedar or lavender to clean to your floors with; this will help keep any moths or insects away.

• Moths loves feathers more than anything else – hide several dishes of feathers throughout the room your rug is in (i.e.tops of tall cupboards, bookcases, etc). Check them regularly and replace when needed.

• Moths are most active in June, July & August.

• Moth-prone parts of your rug is any part that is tucked under furniture because it’s a quiet dark place.
